About Sheila
Sheila Dallas-Katzman, MA is a passionate applied theatre practitioner using action methods with community groups, private and public sectors. She has been The Theatre of the Oppressed,
Ms. Katzman is the co-founder of Ten Lanterns Transformative Theatre, which uses Theatre of the Oppressed and Sociodrama, and Psychodrama, as tools for social change. She is the President of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT/USA); and chairs the NYC for CEDAW Act Coalition, working closely with the NYC Legislators and the Commission for Gender Equity, to bring New York City into compliance with CEDAW (United Nations Convention, for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women).
She is co-founder of Kings County BIPOC project developed to capacitate Youth 14-24 in navigating community issues through the arts and media. Her work intersects with the public and private sector institutions, governments, religious groups, and grassroots organizations, and international organizations. Clientele includes, USAID, Digitas Health, Refugee Action, RECLAIM (UK), CANS - Community Action Network UK, and Actors for Human Rights. She is a playwright, theatre director and actor. Her work in the theatre is focused on social justice, including climate change. Sheila is the co-founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed Food Stories virtual encounter.
Sheila is a former The United Nations professional, who has worked in the capacity as Chief of the largest United Nations Peacekeeping Radio, led Public Information Section and Act as Spokesperson, for the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Sierra Leone.
She holds a Masters’ Degree in Applied Theatre from the University of Manchester; and a Bachelor of Arts Degree, in Broadcast Journalism/Media Studies from Hunter College/CUNY, and a Teaching Diploma in Theatre Arts, from – The Edna Manley School of Visual and Performing Arts (Jamaica); and has post-graduate credits in Conflict Resolution from SIPA, Columbia University. She has garnered numerous awards for her work in radio and peacekeeping and theatre, and was awarded the UN Women Champion of Change 2018.
